Why choose Theatre Studies A/AS Level?

Theatre Studies is the study of plays and the history of theatre from the point of view of an actor, a director, a designer and a member of an audience. One of the main appeals is the study is based on group activities, so learning takes place through the shared experience of watching theatre and making drama as part of the group. You can learn about the main thinkers and practitioners who have influenced theatre in the twentieth century;

There are 4 units of work

AS
Unit 1
A personal response to live theatre seen during the course and the study of a set play from a performance perspective.

Unit 2
Performance of an extract from a published play and the study of an influential practitioner, linked to the practical performance.

A2
Unit 3
Study of two set plays – a twentieth century play or contemporary drama and a pre-twentieth century play.

Unit 4
Performance of a group devised drama and research into the theatrical style chosen for the performance.

Students devise a piece of original theatre on any topic to be performed in a particular theatrical style of their choice. The assessment also includes candidates’

Who takes this course?

Grade A* to C in GCSE Drama and English and a keen desire to watch live theatre.

What skills will I learn?

Through the practical exploration of plays you will learn:

  • the organisational and management skills of a director
  • the skills of a theatre designer handling shape, size, colour and texture
  • the voice and movement skills of an actor
  • the vocabulary of a critic
  • the responsibilities of being a team member
  • the social and cultural context of theatre over the past 2,000 years
  • how to shape and appreciate the actor-audience relationship

What could this lead to in the future?

Many of our students have gained places at university to study teaching, marketing, translating, acting, theatre design, film and directing. Many of the skills you learn are transferable to most jobs and situations in life. Theatre study students are confident employable communicators.
