The Economics and Business GCE is innovative and enlightening and the emphasis is on giving students the opportunity to apply their knowledge to specific economic and business situations and issues.
The fresh approach of the course is built around an enterprise theme enabling students to research and develop their own business ideas and apply them to their learning. The qualification also introduces students to the ever more important area of international business equipping them for work and business management in an international context.
The course is very dynamic and students will constantly refer to real life situations and events in the business and economic world going on around them with a focus on the wider economic environment. Research, analysis and evaluation skills will be essential as well as an enquiring mind.
Alan Sugar said this of one of his apprentices, I don’t want to feel this about you after six weeks – so always remember ; commitment and hard work are the key to success!
"Could be you’re here because you’re good with words and know the right thing to say at the right time. I know the words to Candle in the Wind. It doesn't make me Elton John."
Unit Titles
Assessment of the course is through external examination at the end of each unit which involve a range of different skills including multiple choice questions, data response, case studies and a decision making report which all reflect the wide ranging learning styles used through the teaching of the course.

A previous qualification at GCSE in Business or Economics is not essential but an interest in current affairs is very helpful to any student considering this course. A good range of GCSE skills are, however, vital with English and Mathematics at A*-C essential as part of at least 5 A*-C grades overall.
Students of Economics and Business should be prepared to keep up to date with economic and business events through all forms of the media as part of their studies. A genuine passion for all types of enterprise and a creative, adaptable personality will reap real rewards.
Visits and guest speakers will also be incorporated into the course at appropriate times and therefore communication, presentation and numeracy skills are important. Linking work experience with the course would also be useful as a learning tool.
Whilst no specific equipment is required to take part in the course, an enquiring mind and a willingness to take part in group work and complete individual research is essential.
Following completion of this course students will be well equipped to move onto a range of business and economics based courses at university as well as providing an invaluable preparation to the world of work and the general business and economic environment.
Student’s who take Economics and Business AS/A Level often also study Sociology, Psychology or History. This A Level complements a wide variety of other subjects.
Talk to your Business Studies teacher and get some advice as to whether the course could be right for you. Making an appointment to see your school careers advisor is also a good idea.
