National Road Safety Week Launch with Lady Lumley’s 6th Form

On Monday 8th June, Lady Lumley’s 6th Form hosted the National CFOA Road Safety Week launch.  The aim of the Road Safety Week is for Fire and Rescue services across the UK to come together to raise awareness of the dangers to young drivers of driving whilst distracted. Organiser Mark Naylor (Road Safety Lead for North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service) said:  “Unfortunately, what we call the fatal four, ie speed, seat belt, drink and mobile phones play a large part in the contributory factors leading to a collision”.

Year 12 students were able to participate in a number of demonstrations and interactive sessions  designed to inform them about the dangers for young drivers:

“I thought the day was intriguing and included several stages: a reaction time test, a distraction test, watching videos of dangerous driving and their consequences, a driving simulator as well as a live casualty rescue demonstration of how firemen get into a car which has been involved in a collision.  This particularly was very impressive, as every fireman knew his role and carried it out with precision and efficiency.  This was the highlight of the day for me”.  (Joseph Wilmore Yr12)

The Road Safety launch was very effective in teaching me the consequences of going on my mobile phone whilst driving.  I learnt that the risk of crashing is 24 times greater when on your phone.  My favourite part was having a go at driving on the simulator”.

(Katie Richmond Yr12)

“I thought it was a really enjoyable and educational experience. Not only was it fun to participate in, but it warned us about the dangers that can occur as the result of unsafe driving”.  (Hannah Grant Yr12)
